Patient Success Stories

We are proud to present hundreds of success stories that have had a chance to experience relief from Dr. Tong’s treatments.

Patient Letter: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

As a teacher and part-time house painter, my hands are extremely important to me. This past summer I injured my right hand while painting and had the situation diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome. In layman terms, it has to do with inflammation of the wrist caused by strain. The result was discomforting; partial loss of feeling and movement in my thumb and two fingers caused me to become very concerned.

I received a wrist brace and some anti-inflammatory medication and was told by my orthopedic surgeon to “give it time”. If things didn’t change after several weeks, I would have to have surgery. This was just before the school year was to start – and I didn’t have time!

My closest friend, David Rich, told me of a remarkable man who combines an even more remarkable process known as acupuncture with western medicine.

After three weeks and a dozen or so visits to Dr. Tong’s office, I now have complete use of my hand and fingers. Dr. Tong’s staff treat me with nothing less than the utmost care and concern.

Patient Letter: Sciatica

I am a very active 92 years old. I go to Holiday Spa and workout with weights, swimming and exercise for two hours, four times a week. This is my 21st years in the health spa. Last year, I came down with sciatica so severe that I told Dr. Tong when I went to bed, I wish I would not wake up in the morning. I have had treatments from Dr. Tong for two and a half months, now the pain is all gone. I am back to my active life. I have my driver license renewed for four more years. I am very happy.

Patient Letter: Neck pain, Shoulder pain, Arm pain

After more than one year of almost constant nagging pain, treated with traction and different types of medications without any effect. Then someone suggested acupuncture, he also was a former patient of Dr. Tong, and would highly recommend his treatments.

At my first visit with Dr. Tong he promised to reduce my pain 90%, he did much better the pain is gone.

Acupuncture and nerve blocks has proven to be effective, thanks to Dr. Tong and Dr. Chin.

It was always a pleasure to visit Dr. Tong’s office. His staff is well organized, courteous, very friendly and considered.

I would recommend Dr. Tong to anyone

Patient Letter: Sciatica

Dr. Tong and Staff

March 25, 1991

I was diagnosed as having severe sciatica February 1, 1991, by my doctor at Kaiser. After a month of taking medication, heat packs, rest etc, my pain decreased about thirty percent. I was advised to rest because my condition would last about three months. That’s when I started thinking about other alternatives.

My other alternative was something drug less, so I decided to try acupuncture or whatever Dr. Tong advised. I was referred to Dr. Tong by a friend who gave me a newspaper clipping of Dr. Tong and his methods.

I would like to say it’s the best thing to happen to me. After three treatments that pain in my thigh and buttock is gone, my mobility is 100% and my mental state is back to normal.

Every person is different physically, what works for me may not work for someone else. I would like to say to anyone who is in severe pain, try Dr. Tong’s methods it may be the best move you’ll ever make.

Thanks to Dr. Tong and his caring staff for all the excellent medical care, sciatica comes and goes, if I have another attack Dr. Tong is my doctor.

Thank you

Patient Letter: Neck pain, Shoulder pain, Arm pain, Wrist pain, Hand pain

I suffered severe pain in my neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands for several weeks.  At night, I could not sleep due to the extreme pain in my hands.  I would be up treating my hands with hot water, ointments, and heating pads.  After going to three different American Doctors, I got very little relief.  The only thing they had to offer was some type of medicine to help relieve the pain.  My next stop was Yee Wing Tong, M.D. and after one visit at his clinic by acupuncture, my condition was improved by seventy five percent.  I was then able to get a good night’s sleep.  In closing, let me say Dr. Tong did more in twenty minutes to relieve the pain in my hands and arms than the other three doctors did together.

Patient Letter: RSD, Chronic pain, TMJ

To whom it may concern:

In June of 1986, is when all of my health problems began. Since that time I have seen different doctors, tried many types of medications and treatments and have spent thousands of dollars, but nothing really seemed to help until I came to Dr. Tong.

In 1986, I had my wisdom teeth removed and thereafter I started having neck and shoulder pain. I saw an orthopedic who took x-rays and could not find anything wrong. Then I started seeing a chiropractor and eventually went into a physical therapy program. One day the therapist mentioned that I might have a TMJ disorder. By this time I had also started having pain on the right side of my head and face. I then saw a dentist who specialized in TMJ and he did an MRI. The MRI showed that I had adhesions on the TMJ joints. I was sent to a surgeon who did arthroscopic surgery to remove the adhesions and then went for months of physical therapy. After the surgery the facial pain had only become worse. I was having a lot of problems with muscle spasms and nerve pain on the right side of my head and face.

I was starting to feel very discouraged and did not know what to do. I then heard about another dentist who had helped patients with TMJ problems. I made another appointment and had x-rays and impressions taken and found that I had a severe malocclusion. His theory was that by making gold crowns and reconstructing the mouth he could improve the bite and alleviate my pain. After much thought I made the decision to have the dental work done. I spent many hours in the dental chair and as the dental work was almost completed I was feeling worse than ever. I was becoming very weak, my muscles ached all the time and my skin coloring was not good. The facial pain was intolerable.

I then decided to see my family doctor and asked him to authorize an MRI of the brain. I felt sure there had to be something else wrong. The MRI showed I had a pituitary tumor and was sent to an endocrinologist who ran blood tests and confirmed that I had Cushing’s disease. I then saw a neurosurgeon who did brain surgery to remove the tumor. I spent 12 days in the hospital and after coming home I felt better in some ways but I still had the neck, shoulder and facial pain.

After the brain surgery I saw a neurologist who said that I had trigeminal neuralgia. I started taking very strong nerve medications, none of which really stopped the pain. After 6 months decided to get a second opinion and saw a neurologist and a neurosurgeon at Scripps in La Jolla. It was their opinion that I did not have trigeminal neuralgia and that the problem was muscle-related and I should consult a rheumatologist. I saw a rheumatologist at Scripps for injections of cortisone and tried some new medications but because of the long distance to travel and because I didn’t feel it was helping me I decided to find a rheumatologist closer to home.

It had been a year since the pituitary and I was becoming very frustrated going from one doctor to another and no one seemed to be able to help me. The facial pain was becoming worse again and another MRI showed I had a large cyst in the right maxillary sinus. I was then sent to an ENT specialist and had sinus surgery. After the surgery, the facial pain seemed to get somewhat better but was not gone. Within a couple of months I started having some back pain and an ultrasound showed that I had gallstones and would have to get my gallbladder removed.

In the last two years I had been through three surgeries and seen many doctors and yet no one could stop the chronic pain I was having. I then saw my endocrinologist who recommended a good rheumatologist. He diagnosed the problem as thoracic outlet syndrome which had led to a condition known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. He sent me to UCLA Medical Center for a specialized MRI which confirmed his diagnosis. UCLA was in the process of scheduling some permanent nerve blocks, when much to my surprise I found out that I was pregnant. Because of my condition, they would not consider doing anything until I had the baby. I immediately stopped all medications but within weeks the pain was intolerable again.

Once again I did not know what to do. I told my rheumatologist that I did not think I could make it through the pregnancy without doing something for the pain. He then suggested I call Dr. Tong. He had heard some very positive things about Dr. Tong’s treatments and that he had been successful in helping many of his patients.

I made an appointment to see Dr. Tong and after just a couple of visits the pain was at least 60% better. I found that the acupuncture and nerve block injections worked better than any medicines, muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs I had taken. I had finally found a way to get some relief from my pain without the use of drugs. During the pregnancy I also developed carpal tunnel syndrome and Dr. Tong’s treatments also helped with that pain after just several visits. A short period of time before having the baby I discontinued treatments but resumed going for more acupuncture and nerve block injections within a couple of months after the delivery and with regular periodic visits I was starting to see improvement in my condition. I feel that Dr. Tong’s treatments have been successful and with continued treatments I hope to one day be pain-free.

Patient Letter: Migraines, Headaches

I have suffered with migraine headaches for two and a half years. I found temporary relief with of the counter drugs but eventually discovered it took more and more tablets and at least 2-3 days before the migraine went completely away, not to mention the side effects from these drugs.

I have been to three specialists, and always came up with the same answer “try to relax” (since tension can bring on my headaches) and then I was given a prescription – which worked alright – until I ran out of tablets.

Finally I was referred to Dr. Tong by a relative and decided I had nothing to lose. I was a little skeptical at first but the pain in my head was getting out of hand so I had to give Dr. Tong a try. After only 7 treatments my headaches have completely disappeared. I must encourage anyone to go to Dr. Tong – if you are really serious about getting rid of pain that is!

Patient Letter: Migraines

Testimony from Pat. B. :

I have experienced incapacitating migraines for 5 years. They were increasing in frequency to the extent I could not count on being able to work regularly. I grew to a place where I was always aware and afraid that one might be imminent. I began to be cautious and fearful all the time.

I tried everything I would hear of that might prevent or alleviate migraines all to no avail. Even the available medicines could not stop my devastating migraines. In mid summer ‘91 one medicine became available that did work (Midrin). It worked to the extent that it could sometimes knock out the migraine, but most of the time just reduce the intensity of the pain.

When I got my worst migraines I would vomit, pass out, become extremely cold to the point of shivering almost convulsively; I had to stay in a very dark room with no movement around me and noise – for up to 24 hrs. Then after coming out of it I would be worn out and sick and sore all over for the 2 or 3 days following. Life was not worth living during a migraine. Anyone who experiences severe migraines knows this. You just go to bed and pretend you are dead until it passes over.

So when my pharmacist suggested acupuncture with Dr. Tong, I was most open to giving it a try. I was OK with the acupuncture needles but Dr. Tong’s injections were intimidating. I reasoned that nothing could be as bad as another migraine, so I consented to follow his lead. When I started treatment with Dr. Tong my head had been sore for several weeks, a residue of the migraines. And I was walking around fearful all the time of another one coming on. I felt weak, helpless to assist myself, and I wondered if I would be able to count on my body again.

I come from very strong stock. My family (myself included) enjoy what I call “pioneer strength”. We are exceptionally strong in body and mind, and in determination as well. I always believe I can do anything I want to do. Before the migraines I never had a health problem, so I found them a humbling experience.

It was only this summer that I made up my mind I was going to “lick” them and I began asking for guidance and looking for real answers to the migraine problem, not just drugs. I wanted a real cure and this is what I asked for. When acupuncture was suggested I considered it to be divine guidance and I acted on it immediately. The results were almost immediate and on the 3rd treatment the bulk of the work was complete and I was a very, very appreciative woman.

In the two months since then I have had 2 very light migraines– The worst part of them was my fear that they would go into full migraines. Neither one was at all severe, but merely a reminder of how very much I have to be thankful for. (Perhaps that was their purpose!)

I thank you, Dr. Tong, for your skill, for your insight and for your warm, abundant sense of humor. I will always be thankful for what you have done for me.

And I thank God for you, Dr. Tong. I consider you the specific answer to a specific request. After all, that’s the way it works, isn’t it?

Patient Letter: Headaches, Migraines

I have been plagued with chronic headaches and migraines for the last 20+ years of my life. Daily headaches and a migraine every few months became a normal part of my life. My doctor recommended aspirin, of course, for my migraines. I got to a point where enough was enough and I thought of alternative methods of treatment. My doctor recommended a chiropractor in August off 1992. I remained in his care for one year receiving treatments 2-3 times per week. I received relief to a certain point which we couldn’t overcome. My headaches were not totally gone but I did have some relief. At this time he suggested I see an acupuncturist for further help. He recommended Dr. Tong. After a few treatments my pain was greatly reduced. I slept better without pain in the middle of the night or without waking up in the morning with a headache. It feels so good to be able to go through a day without a headache. Through continued care we hope to completely dismiss this pain. His treatments have really benefited my life for the better.

Sincerely,

– Pamela D. K.

Patient Letter: Back pain, Muscle spasms, Multiple Sclerosis

Dear Dr. Tong:

In 1981 I was hit in my car by another car, and sustained back and eye injuries, which at least 50 medical specialists were able to document but unable to cure.

By 1988 my back muscles had deteriorated so much that for weeks I could walk and exercise and on some days I could not even move from a sitting position; and I had no idea when the spasms would start. By 1989 I was unable to engage in more military tours of active duty but was able to secure a job as a law clerk to a very kind judge (Honorable Edward Dean Price of Fresno), and was forced to spend almost 6 months in crutches; and many weeks on the floor of his chambers during working hours typing case material into a computer because I could not stand up nor sit in a chair for longer than 10 minutes.

I tried stretching and exercising under direction of military doctors assigned to Balboa Navy Hospital in San Diego in 1990, and the condition got worse. At one point I actually fell down in the middle of a department store from a back spasm when I dared to try to stand up for more than 5 minutes, and I had to crawl out of the store, aided by the local police to get to a doctor. One doctor was considering a diagnosis of MS since I had an abnormally high antigen level associated with MS. In 1991 I took a chance at acupuncture from Dr. Tong, and I borrowed all the money I could for a string of treatments from Dr. Tong.

When I first drove to Dr. Tong’s office from San Diego I had to stop the car every 10 minutes to rest my back. The trip took 5 hours, and Dr. Tong’s acupuncture treatments hurt so much that I was sweating profusely just lying on the table. I cannot represent that it was fun and games; but I kept coming since it was in my opinion, my last chance at a possibility of a normal life. I also declined to make any statements about progress because my investigative and legal training in and out of the military made me suspicious ad cautious about conclusions; particularly medical ones.

By about the fifth treatment I noticed a small change: my back now took 15 minutes to spasm in the car instead of 10 minutes. By about 10 treatments my back condition improved to the point it was at after the 1981 accident, and the same acupuncture treatments stopped hurting entirely. By early December 1991 there were no more spasms, and I was able to start a full exercise routine and my back was stronger than it was before the accident.

By mid-December 1992 I was given the best Christmas present I have ever had, and possibly will ever have in my life: I was given a clean bill of health in a U.S. Navy physical examination and cleared for active duty again. All back muscles and nerves were intact, responses were correct, and agility was back to normal.

The funny part about being healthy is that you get busy again and forget sometimes what it was like to be paralyzed and be forced to spend one entire hour just trying to go to the bathroom after you have already crawled into the room. But I will not forget that my normal life was essentially over before I started treatment with Dr. Tong; and he changed it.

I am a person who has always hated needles and still do. But the pain from treatments was and is mild compared to the pain of the years of physical and social paralysis. If anyone is concerned about possible pain, I urge you to wake up and get over it quickly, because it is not that big a deal once you have the treatment. Most people are just not as sensitive as I am about it.

I cannot describe my relief. I am enormously grateful to this good doctor, and I am sorry to have waited this long to say something about it. I will be glad to talk to anyone to verify how he has helped and how careful he is in his treatments.

Sincerely yours,

– Mel
