What can trigger sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the tissue lining in the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are usually filled with air, but when they become filled with liquid, germs and bacteria are more likely to grow and cause an infection. Common causes of sinusitis are the common cold, nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose), allergies, and illness from surrounding people.

What are the risk factors?

Young children – infants and young children with immature immune systems and smaller nasal passages are more prone to getting respiratory tract infections
Elderly – nasal passages that dry out with age along with a diminished cough and gag reflex and weak immune system increase their risk of serious respiratory tract infections
Asthma and allergies – asthma and allergies compromise respiratory tract system, may make people more susceptible to sinus infections
Hospitalizations – head injuries, those on ventilators, those that require tubes up their noses, and patients with weakened immune systems are all at greater risk for sinus infections
Other medical conditions – diabetes, GERD, nasal polyps, AIDS, oral or IV steroid treatment, hypothyroidism can all increase risk of respiratory tract infections

Symptoms

Acute sinusitis can last up to 4 weeks, while chronic sinusitis can continue for months or years. Symptoms of sinusitis can include fever, congestion, loss of smell, facial pain or pressure. In some cases, you may also have fatigue or bad breath. With acute or chronic sinusitis, you may have thick yellow-green nasal discharge.

Solutions for sinusitis

The most common treatment for sinusitis is a prescription of antihistamines or antibiotics. Although they may relieve the symptoms they do not cure the cause. In addition, long term use of antibiotics disrupt the normal flora of our gut causing a host of gastrointestinal problems. In severe chronic causes, sinus surgery is done.

In Chinese medicine, the cause of sinusitis is the accumulation of either cold or hot wind. This accumulation can block the nasal passages. Our treatment clears these blockages, opening up the nasal passages and improving the ability to breath. Herbs and supplements are then prescribed to strengthen the immune system and either clear heat, cold, or damp/phlegm, depending on the individual’s diagnosis, in order to prevent future colds and infections.

What people say about Dr Tong‘s sinusitis relief treatments

“We went to Dr. Tong, and after he explained the philosophy and reasoning of acupuncture to dispel our fears, he gave Jenny her first treatment. For the first time in 6 years she was able to breathe out of her nose freely. She came home and began to smell things she hadn’t smelled before. When she went to bed that night she smiled and giggled as she closed her mouth and was able to breathe. I couldn’t believe the results. Her teacher also wrote me a note to say (after the first couple of treatments) she also noticed great improvement.”
